چکیده

The meaning and lexical category of so-called verbal roots is one aspect of the voice systems in Tagalog and other Philippine-type languages which has received little attention in the controversy surrounding the analysis of these systems. It is common to assume that these roots cannot occur without any affixation and that, therefore, they should be considered precategorial. Here it is shown that this view is ill-conceived. To begin with, it is possible to distinguish different classes of roots based on morphological features. Therefore, roots are not precategorial. Furthermore, a large majority of the putative verbal roots allows for unaffixed uses. However, ‘verbal roots’ have ‘non-verbal’ meanings when used without voice marking. Inasmuch as it can be shown that voice-marked forms have clearly ‘verbal’ meanings, it follows that voice marking is derivational (among many other things). The first part of the paper is taken up by the discussion of some basic issues regarding the nature of lexical and syntactic categories, which is a prerequisite to sorting out the Tagalog facts. Contrary to standard assumptions, it is proposed that a clear-cut distinction should be made between lexical and syntactic (i.e. phrasestructural) categories, allowing for mismatches between these two kinds of categorisations of lexical items.

On Some Ways to Test Tagalog Nominalism from a Crosslinguistic Perspective

Daniel Kaufman's core proposal is that much of what is typologically special about Tagalog syntax is rooted in the language having nouns but not verbs as its core lexical categories. He sees this at two levels. First, bare roots in Tagalog are nominal rather than verbal; for example, bili on its own means 'price bought for' rather than 'buy'. Second, he claims that fully inflected " verbs " in ...

Nouns and Verbs in Tagalog: a reply to Foley

There is an old saying to the effect that “any English noun can be verbed.” In Tagalog too it appears that any noun can be verbed; and moreover, that any verb can be nouned. If this is true, can we really maintain a distinction between these two categories in Tagalog? As Foley (1998) points out, this question has been a matter of serious debate for almost 100 years, and opinion among specialist...

The role of information structure for morphosyntactic choices in Tagalog

In this paper we investigate the influence of two information structure (IS) related aspects on the choice of voice form and sentence structure by Tagalog speakers. The first is the information status of argument referents. Tagalog is a multiple voice language, so almost every semantic argument in a sentence can be turned into the privileged syntactic argument (or subject) and be rendered salie...

An Interpretation of Nominative Arguments, Voice-Affixes and Verb Stems in Tagalog

In Tagalog each verb stem v can combine with a certain number of voice affixes(VA). Traditionally, these affixes (actor voice affixes: ‘um-’, ‘mag-’; objective voice affixes: ‘-in’, ‘-an’, ‘i-’) have been said to identify the semantic role of the nominative argument (subject) of the sentence. Yet, as data taken from English 1997 show, they determine the aspectual interpretation of the verb.Thes...

The production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition

This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...
